Nuff respect on all counts. You know how I feel about the concept, and all of what you have done to emancipate the rest of us from mental slavery.

Walk good.

Sean and family-
Babylon Falling has been an oasis and I am an ever thirsty reader. I worry, not about you...your resiliency, ability, and resourcefulness are quite evident...I worry about the gaping hole where Babylon Falling once resided. What kind of a culture is this that cannot find it in its heart and pocket to sustain such a gritty yet elegant literary venture? No matter, I'm often at odds with prevailing culture. But I know good bookstore when I find one, and I know a fine, supple, and creative entrepreneur when I shake his hand.
Bonne chance! in all new explorations. I will bookmark these two years as much better for having been your faithful customer.

Babylon Falling, this week in Tehran.

‘If nothing else the thing I will take with me is the knowledge of just how powerful the creation of an inclusive, vibrant community can be.’

C’est ca mon ami, there is the kernel. The beacon on the corner of Bush & Jones is not gone, but it is on the move… You created a space that will continue to inspire all those who had the good fortune to gather around you and all those words. Even the screamers at the Balmoral may lament the sudden loss of light opposite.

Thank you Sean for keeping the door wide open.

Wishing you, and your wife to be, much love & laughter.

Sean, What a moving description of the challenges faced by those of us in the book trade today. I've often used the idea of the curatorial aspect of a bookseller's job being a crucial service for the community, but it becomes clearer all the time that people don't get it, or want it. This is a role booksellers have had for centuries and yet Americans, in just one generation, have completely walked away from this concept. It's sad for everyone that another good bookshop closes, and saddest for your community, that some don't know what they'll be missing. Best of luck with whatever is next.

More respect to you and appreciation for this key summation: "The idea of the bookseller in a curatorial role as a member of the community seems to be completely foreign to a culture that demands convenience above all else." B/F really was a community center: you made everyone feel welcome, always slipped some hard-won cultural insights into the conversation and demonstrated that the "revolution" is about reclaiming and taking back human scale relationships rather than tearing down and reacting to the bankrupt past.

Thanks too for introducing so many of us to so many amazing artists and for creating this archive and repository of their stories and their work.

blessings and strength to your sword arm,

Mark

I have so much respect for you amd what you tried to do with the store. While I am sad the store is closing, I am glad that you are able to do it on your terms. Wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

P.S. You would make a great social studies teacher ;) Floow your heart.

The only thing smoother than Kurt Rambis' flow are those ball-hugging Bermuda shorts. Damn I'm glad I was a little kid in '87 and never tried to pull off the neon wife beater.
